What Is Oral Hygiene?
Oral hygiene is the process of keeping your mouth and teeth clean so they look and smell healthy. This is especially important when you are wearing braces because these corrective devices can trap food particles and hinder your ability to brush and floss. There are many steps to good oral hygiene, we make sure to teach all of our patients the significance of a cleaning regimen.
At Winning Smiles Orthodontics, with offices located in Bowie and Hyattsville, we take pride in providing high-quality services to the adults, teenagers, and children of Bowie, MD; Hyattsville, MD; Prince George’s County; Montgomery County; Anne Arundel County; and beyond. What Is the Proper Way to Brush My Teeth?
To maintain good oral hygiene, the initial line of defense is knowing the right way to brush your teeth. First, begin at the outside of your teeth and, with the brush at a straight angle, use circular, vibrating strokes. Clean the area between your braces by angling the brush up and then down. Make sure to carefully clean the chewing surfaces of both jaws. Finally, brush the inside of your teeth.
What Is a Proxabrush?
This interdental toothbrush helps properly clean your teeth when you have metal or ceramic braces. The key is to maneuver the special tip under the wires and, if there is room, gently push it between your teeth to work out plaque, food, and other sediments. A Proxabrush has been a useful oral hygiene tool for our patients. You must use it carefully, however, so you do not damage your braces.
How Can I Floss With Braces?
There is no way to achieve proper oral hygiene without daily flossing. To floss with braces, you need to maneuver the floss under the arch wire with the help of a floss threader. Once you place the floss through the head of the threader, push the end of the threader under the arch wire, and then pull the floss through. Move the floss up and down both sides of each tooth, reaching all the way to the gums. Repeat the process with a different section of floss for the next tooth.
Why Is Rinsing Important After Brushing and Flossing?
By using water or an antiseptic rinse, you improve oral hygiene by helping to clean away any leftover debris. Also, we recommends an antiseptic rinse to his patients because it helps to heal minor irritations and inflammations caused by brushing, flossing, or your orthodontic device.
How Do I Take Care of My Retainer?
Every time you brush your teeth, you should brush your retainer to remove accumulated food particles and plaque. This is good practice for maintaining healthy oral hygiene. We also advise that retainers be soaked once a day in a glass of room-temperature water that contains a tablet of denture cleaner. With this procedure, his patients can prevent plaque buildup on their retainers, as well as reduce the chances of oral infections. Do not use hot water, however, because it can cause your retainer to lose its shape.
