At the very beginning of orthodontic treatment, many of our patients ask Dr. Brown and our Winning Smiles team a lot of questions about what to expect over both the short and long term. There are also a fair amount of patients that don’t ask any questions and just leave it to us to create that beautiful, winning smile. We understand both philosophies, and are always equipped to provide plenty of information to put our patients at ease with the orthodontic process.
Two of the most common questions are; “Will my braces hurt?” and “When will my braces be removed?” We explain to our patients that braces do not hurt when they’re initially placed on. Too often, our patients hear horror stories about how much it hurts to get the braces on, so they tend to over-worry. The truth is that most patients either take a nap or quietly listen to their music while the braces are being applied, because the application of braces really is that easy and painless! Most patients experience a little bit of discomfort and soreness hours after braces are placed – when the teeth start to move. The soreness for most patients usually lasts approximately 3-4 days, and can be minimized or eliminated by taking Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
At Winning Smiles Orthodontics, we answer many other questions during the initial exam and bonding appointment. When a patient visits our office for the first time, we give them a time estimate of how long it will take to achieve their winning smile. All other questions are typically answered at the bonding appointment when the braces are placed. On the day of the bonding, we talk to our patients about everything from what foods they can eat with their braces, to how to effectively clean their teeth with braces. We are always happy to answer any questions that our patients may have. We have also made our website extremely informational, such that the most common questions about braces are are answered right on our website as well! Our patients will always know what’s going on throughout their orthodontic experience with Winning Smiles Orthodontics.
