Have you ever stopped to think about the importance of a great smile? Well, in a survey recently done of more than 1,000 Americans (age 18 and over), 72% of the respondents agreed that people of all ages with healthy, straight teeth are typically treated better in social situations than those with noticeably crooked teeth. Alarmingly, nearly half of the respondents also said that people with crooked teeth left them with a negative first impression.
Recently, Invisalign contracted Kelton Research to run a visual perception study. The results of this research reinforce commonly held notions that Americans feel about teeth. Most Americans say that teeth are a standout feature when it comes to what they notice and recall when first meeting someone. Therefore, straight, white, healthy teeth tend to leave a positive and lasting impression. Additionally, Americans perceived those with straight teeth to be 45% more likely to be successful than those with crooked teeth when competing with someone who has similar skill sets and/or experience. Finally, nearly 3/4 of all Americans (73%) would be more likely to trust someone with a nice smile than someone who has a nice suit, job, or car!
The bottom line is that perception is extremely important in shaping how people see you. With the vast array of options that now makes orthodontic treatment affordable, and with so many cosmetic options available to make orthodontic treatment less noticeable, getting your teeth straightened is something everyone should consider. Traditional orthodontics with metal or clear braces, and Invisalign are becoming more and more popular for both teenagers and adults. Everyone can have a great smile!
